INSPIRATION

Da Vinci in the detail

The standout feature of this coat is the smocking detail at the nape of the neck, a striking piece of artisanal hand-sewing that takes its inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s knots and geometric sketches discovered in the Codex Atlanticus at Milan’s Pinacoteca Ambrosiana library. Inspiration drawn from da Vinci’s studies of drapery can also be seen in the silhouette of this piece, characterised by generous folds to the sleeves, back and, when tied with the belt, at the waist.

DATA-DRIVEN DESIGN

Data in design

The inclusion of a tie belt is a direct result of the data-driven principles applied to the design process to ensure longevity. With exclusive access to YOOX NET-A-PORTER data, the designers were able to identify a long-term customer preference for coats with tie belts, an insight that was built into the final design of this coat by Francesca.

PRODUCTION

Handmade at Dumfries House

This coat has been made by hand at Dumfries House by Graeme, Jillian, Nicole and Tracey. It is made using a 92% merino wool and 8% cashmere camel coating cloth from Scottish luxury supplier Johnstons of Elgin. Its light blue lining is made from GOTS-certified organic and 100% traceable silk, made in Italy by Centro Seta.

CARE

Make your loved clothes last

Recommendations from YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP partner Clothes Doctor on how to keep this piece looking its best for years to come. Contact Clothes Doctor for more detailed care and repair advice.

  • Avoid washing by using our Clothes Brush to remove fibres, dust, dirt and hair on the garment when dry. Brush in the same direction at all times, applying gentle pressure to avoid damaging fibres (even if you find specific patches of dirt that require a little more attention).
  • Remove bobbles, lint and hair with our Cashmere Comb in Red Cedarwood which is perfect to depill. Run it gently across the fabric to catch any loose fibres.
  • Lightly steam to refresh, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and remove odour. The steam will cause the fibres and fabric to swell providing a fuller and more colourful look.
  • Place a Fragrance Bag on the hanger with the coat to naturally deter moths. Ideally also keep the coat inside a moth proof garment bag.
  • Spot clean with our Eco Wash for Cashmere and Wool to remove light stains (this does not need to be rinsed out).
  • For older or tougher stains and if the coat needs to be completely washed, then use dry cleaning as a last resort, preferably using an environmentally friendly dry cleaners.
